['hɑːtfəd], Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Connecticut, USA, am Connecticut River, der bis Hartford schiffbar ist; 139 700 Einwohner (Metropolitan Area: 1,09 Mio. Einwohner); katholischer Erzbischofssitz; Trinity College (gegründet 1823), Hartford Graduate Center (gegründet 1955), Wadsworth Atheneum (Kunstmuseum). Hartford ist Hauptsitz des amerikanischen Versicherungsgewerbes (etwa 40 Unternehmen) und ein Finanzzentrum; ferner Herstellung von Präzisionsinstrumenten und elektrotechnische Industrie.
 
 
In der Stadt haben sich Bauten des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts erhalten: Old State House (1796) von C. Bulfinch; State Capitol (1878) von R. Upjohn; Harriet Beecher Stowe House (1871); Mark Twain House (1874); in den 1960/70er-Jahren wurden mehrere Verwaltungs- und Bürogebäude u. a. durch das Architektenbüro K. Roche & J. Dinkeloo sowie von SOM errichtet.
 
 
Hartford, eine der ältesten Siedlungen in den USA, wurde 1635 als Newtown (seit 1637 heutiger Name) um ein 1633 erbautes niederländisches Fort gegründet.
